There are other methods of tattoo removal besides laser tattoo removal.

The surgical removal of tattoos can leave scars. The tattoo is literally cut off of you and area affected is then sewn back together.

Dermabrasion

Your skin is frozen and then a sanding tool is applied to the area. This method of tattoo removal will cause your skin to peel.

Salabrasion

An old procedure that is still used. Salt water is used in conjunction with dermabrasion to leach the ink out of your skin.

Tattoo Removal Inks

They are applied in much the same way that tattoos are initially done. I’ve heard various reports of heavy scabbing, scarring, bleaching of the surrounding skin, etc. The jury is still out on these products. One product has been cited by the FDA as being dangerous. That warning was not removed when the FDA updated its site. If you go to a tattoo artist who recommends any of these products, insist on talking to people who have already used them. I’d avoid the do it at home products, unless you can get independent verification that they work, without damaging your skin.

Tattoo Removal Creams

They claim "Rub it on and watch your tattoo fade." They don't claim to get rid of tattoos permanently. The jury is still out on Tat-B-Gone and and other products. Beware of the amatuer tattoo removal cream formulas being sold on the net. Taken one by one, the ingrediants sound innocent, but together they can produce an acidic compound that eats away at your skin and can produce hazardous fumes.

When asked if tattoo removal creams really work, The May Clinic said:

"Tattoo removal creams are widely available online. But there's no evidence that they work. At best, tattoo removal cream may fade or lighten a tattoo."
